Boulder County passes Referendum 2H – Soda Tax

Boulder, CO is now the second city in the United States to pass a tax on sugary beverages and sodas. This tax aims to fight obesity, particularly in children, by increasing the price of sugary beverages.

Results for the 2016 Election show that out of the 58,796 votes, 53.87 percent (31,673 people) were for the measure.

Healthy Boulder Kids — a group dedicated to the health and safety of Boulder’s youth — celebrated the victory, stating: “This is a win for us all, but particularly for the low-income families disproportionately targeted by soda advertising, and disproportionately affected by the negative health consequences of consuming sugary drinks.”
