Katie Kulpa, 71, didn’t know picking up three hitchhikers and inviting them into her home might produce potentially harmful consequences. At Kulpa’s residence, one of the hitchhiker’s, Jeffery Collins, suggested the group assault Kulpa and steal her car, his companions refused. Hours later Collins allegedly attacked Kulpa and seriously injured her. Collins friends ran to get help.
Donna Gail, Kulpa’s neighbor, reacted to the attack and wants Collins apprehended. Collins is a juvenile, so a court order was sought to release his photo to the media to cultivate police tips.
After Collin’s arrest, District Attorney Stan Garnett delineated the considerations for deciding whether to charge Collins as an adult. The Boulder County Sheriff’s office is still searching for the driver of the white hatchback car Collins fled the scene in.
