Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle says a law enforcement officer working at area high schools and middle schools is a valuable resource for students and staff, but he told the Daily Camera he would like the Boulder Valley School District to assist the county in paying those school resource officers‘ salaries. District superintendent Bruce Messinger said BVSD has no plans to fund school resource officers .
While local districts like St. Vrain and Adams 12 contribute to SRO salaries, districts around the country have shared BVSD’s struggles. Similar funding issues have arisen near Los Angeles, and also in smaller communities in Minnesota, Virginia, and Alabama.
Although SROs are stationed in K-12 schools for safety purposes, U.S. Secretary of Education John King said many schools are relying too heavily on SROs to provide discipline. King said the Obama administration has issued a new rubric as a guide for utilizing SROs.
