Arts at Risk?; White House Summit; Malala Spreads a Message of Hope Worldwide

by David Cook

Yesterday, Ohio Board of Ed voted to end an “outdated” rule that required all Ohio schools to have a certain amount of art, music and P.E. teachers on staff at all times. Critics worry that the change will doom those not teaching subjects essential to success on standardized tests.

Proponents of pre-kindergarten education will gather at the White House today. This Summit will address the largely bipartisan issue of early education. The administration will be announcing plans to fund $500 million for more Head Start partnerships, as well as other initiatives.

Today, an incredible woman named Malala will become the youngest recipient ever to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. A prominent advocate for women’s education, Malala survived being shot by the Taliban, catapulting her to the international stage, where she serves as a sign of hope and a force for equal rights to disenfranchised groups worldwide.
